Current Educational Trends

You may think this article will let you in on the secrets of the school system.  What are they thinking and what new ideas are they trying in order to promote the education of our future.  The answer to this may very well be our public’s outcry for the tutoring of our youngsters.  Yes, you read this correctly the current trend in education is where is your child getting his additional assistance either for remedial work or for furthering his mind.

I say this with a heavy heart and first hand experience.  I too want my son to be further challenged and so decided to hop on the bandwagon of parents who feel the basics are lacking in our schools.  While waiting for my son to be tested I talked to parents and listened.  Really listened!!!   As I listened I heard parents mention the same reasons for tutoring over and over again.

Parents do not want new gadgets to make learning quicker or easier, they want phonics, diagramming of sentences and timed math tests.  They want what I had as a youngster…. back to basics education.  For without foundations, which are flown through during the school day so we can get to all of the material required by parents, state and district, we are actually not serving the child but serving the public and their construed knowledge of education.

As our day becomes more filled with demands and goals to be met I only see the basics being lost completely.  I foresee an educational system in which parents are teaching reading, writing and arithmetic and the schools will be taking this knowledge to the higher levels demanded by society.  What happened to learning to read in Kindergarten or basic math in first grade?   Why are we as a society placing demands on our teachers to teach our students concepts they are not prepared for?  Do we really need to say Johnny is learning algebra in second grade and reading well beyond grade level?  I only wonder is Johnny still counting on fingers and toes and not understanding what he is phonetically reading.

So if you really want to be on the cutting edge of education I suggest looking into products or services that will give your child the advantage he will need for higher grades.  Do not assume that school has the time to teach as you were once taught.  If you doubt this listen to the questions you child has in the evening over homework.  Are they questions you may have had as a child or are they questions that root back to the non-learning of the basics.

As a former teacher I applaud all the choices we as parents have to increase our awareness and our children’s abilities.  If we all jump on the bandwagon now we will make many centers rich…. or we can go to our local school boards and question those in power about the basics of education and where has it gone.
