The Power of a Positive Teacher

A positive teacher can change the world!  A positive teacher earns and keeps the respect of the children.  A positive teacher is held up on a pedestal and admired by all of his or her children.  A positive teacher can become a superhero.

What qualities make a positive teacher?  And, more importantly, how can you become one?

A positive teacher praises.  Praise from such an individual is sought after and enjoyed by the students.  Praise should be specific.  A child should know why he or she is receiving praise and understand that it is genuine.  Praise should also be sincere.  Children can see right through a fake.  So, earn their respect and be fair and prompt when administering praise.

A positive teacher encourages his or her students.  Students want to be noticed and liked.  A teacher who takes an interest in his or her students gains their trust.  By encouraging students the students will be able to accomplish tasks that they would not normally try.

Encouraging teachers see their students as individuals and treat them as such.  An encouraging teacher is enthusiastic, enjoys his or her job, gives positive feedback, and recognizes effort and accomplishments.  Encouraging teachers become positive role models who are trustworthy, caring and love to share experiences with children.

A positive teacher also shares affection.  Affection can be a hug or a smile or even a phrase.  Children want to know that not only does their teacher share knowledge, but that the teacher genuinely likes him or her.  Amazingly, children who are taught by individuals that they feel like them, tend to do much better academically than children who feel that his or her teacher dislikes them.

A positive teacher appreciates his or her students.  A teacher has a job because of his or her students.  A teacher is able to accomplish good test scores due to the work of his or her students.  A teacher has good discipline in his or her classroom due to his or her students.  Teachers should appreciate what his or her students do for them.  After all, if it weren’t for the students, then a teacher would have nothing to do!

And finally, a positive teacher smiles.  A smile can be contagious.  A smiling teacher is a happy teacher.  A happy teacher has happy students.  Happy students make happy parents and administrators.  A smile can be shared at anytime during a day.  If someone looks sad, smile.  If someone is having a hard time, smile and offer some help.  A smile may be just as important as praise, encouragement, affection and appreciation.

A positive teacher will make a lasting impression.  I am sure we can all remember a favorite teacher.  How many of these qualities did they have?
