Cool Stuff for Adults!

Ever notice how much cool stuff kids have? Fun pens, glow in the dark yogurt, toys - it's just not fair. The good news is that there are lots of things for kids that grownups can enjoy too. Call them "guilty pleasures" - you love 'em but you don't want to admit it. Guilty pleasures like these bring back memories of happy times, when you didn't have to worry about work, bills, terrorism and so forth. Here's my Top Ten:

  1. Bedtime bath products. These contain chamomile and lavender and are marketed as a way to soothe a fussy baby. If they'll work on a fussy baby, they'll do wonders for a stressed-out parent. No household with kids under 18 should be without it. Come to think of it, no household should be without it, period.

  1. Gerber's Blueberry Buckle baby food. It's more like a pudding and tastes incredible, smooth and creamy and deliciously blueberry-ish. I remember buying jars of it when I was a kid and telling people they were for my nieces. Unlike many things, it hasn't changed over the years. Now that I have a baby, I have a great excuse for buying it! Unfortunately, the baby likes it too so I have to buy several jars.

  1. "Sesame Street". The Muppets you knew and loved as a kid are still around and still as goofy as ever. Now you may have a greater appreciation for the musical guests, such as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, violinist Joshua Bell and REM. Besides, you'll pick up a little Spanish and sign language.

Call it spending quality time with your kids.

  1. Zwieback toast. It's crunchy and low calorie. Who could ask for anything more? Crumble one over a salad if you run out of croutons. My favorite way to eat them is with a small amount of butter.

  1. Happy Meals. Fewer calories than one of the Value Meals and you get a cool toy to boot. I have the Tigger pen and Owl hand stamp on my desk.

They recently had Battlebots as the toys so now my oldest son and I have Battlebot matches.

  1. Hair detangling spray. Anyone with long hair, male or female, should have this in the house. Whether your hair is tangled from washing or blowing in the wind, the spray takes care of the mess without pain. A couple quick squirts and a comb flies through your hair.

  1. Cartoons. You've had a lousy day at work, the mailbox is full of bills and you're going to cry if you hear one more piece of bad news. Turn on some cartoons and decompress. Whether you prefer classics like Bugs Bunny or new favorites like Johnny Bravo, you'll find characters that make you laugh.

  1. Baby shampoo. It smells great and you know it's going to be gentle to your hair. Besides, if you have kids and you use it too, that's only one bottle of shampoo you need to remember to buy.

  1. Finger paint. It feels nice and smooshy on your fingers. Even better, the most talented painter and the biggest klutz turn out the same quality of work. If you're feeling silly, you can always toe paint. Make sure you have plenty of wet washcloths or diaper wipes though, unless you were planning to redo every floor in your house.

  1. Goldfish crackers. They're so cheerful - a Snickers just doesn't seem so cheerful. I tell myself that a handful equals a serving of calcium.

After all, they are made from real cheese and they're baked. They're not that high in calories and they fit in a purse or briefcase.

Whenever I have a bad day, I indulge in one or two of these and I feel better almost immediately. Make sure you have some of your favorites on hand and you'll be able to short-circuit stress on a moment's notice.
