Indoor Pets vs. Outdoor Pets

If you are thinking about getting a pet you're probably wondering whether you should get an indoor or an outdoor pet. Let's weigh the options of having an outdoor pet first. If the pet is a large dog, it will need to be kept outside. The animal will need to have a proper shelter to protect it from the elements. A dog house can be purchased relatively inexpensively or one can be built. Animals such as rabbits or chickens will need a pen. Some animals such as cats and dogs may spend a certain amount of time both indoors and outdoors. Having an outdoor animal may cut down on the housework required with indoor animals but it is necessary to clean after outdoor animals too. Dog houses and pens need to be maintained so that the animal's living conditions are kept sanitary and healthy.

Indoor pets need to be trained to stay off furniture. Cats and dogs shed heavily and cats love to use furniture as a scratching post. Both cats and dogs can ruin carpet if not provided with the necessary training. Cats need to be provided with an adequately sized litter box and it must be kept clean. Some cats will not go in the litter box when it needs to be emptied and will find another spot instead so if you want to keep your cat going in the litter box, you need to keep it clean. Dogs need to be taken outdoors or let outside regularly to prevent accidents.

If you are looking for a pet that requires less maintenance, you may want to consider some other choices. Both hamsters and guinea pigs make good pets. They require a minimum amount of care. They need a container that they can't chew through. It must be large enough so that they have room to run about. Habitats for hamsters can be purchased at any pet store or department store. Their home should be cleaned at least once a week. They should always have fresh water and food. Hamsters are relatively quiet, inexpensive pets that make no mess outside of their own habitat. If healthy and well taken care of, they can live two to three years, perhaps longer.

Turtles and fish are favorites of those who are looking for low-maintenance pets. Whether you choose goldfish or tropical fish, these lovely creatures can provide you with much enjoyment. Fish are beautiful to watch and have also been said to be an aid in alleviating stress and lowering the blood pressure by the calm serenity that watching them can produce. They also add beauty to the home. Fish should be fed on a regular schedule, their tanks must be kept clean and water has to be at the proper temperature for the type of fish you choose. When purchasing equipment for your new pets make sure you read all directions completely. Box turtles are favorites of many young boys. They don't require much maintenance and have a fairly long life span.

Whatever pet you choose, check at your local pet store to make sure that you have all the supplies that you will need for your particular pet. Most pet store employees will be happy to instruct you in the care of your new pet and answer any questions that you have. Some pet stores carry small books which can provide you with all you need to know about the care of the pet you have chosen. Whether you decide on an indoor pet or an outdoor pet you will find that all varieties can provide you with a wealth of love and enjoyment.
