Writing Exercise

Items you will need: paper, pencils or pens, and lots
of imagination.
For this writing exercise, I am going to give you specifics
and you can read the list to the child(ren). This list of
particular people, names, places, actions, and the like,
must be turned into a story that makes logical sense.

This exercise will help with oral skills, imagination, and writing skills. You can
repeat the list as many times as needed to the child or children. Allow either
a half an hour or an hour, for the child(ren) to create the story. I strongly
suggest that the teacher or reader of the list, create a story as well. There isn't
any particular order for the items listed below and the child(ren) can write their
own list if needed:
Timmy
Tabatha
Toad
Castle
Knight
Mr. Ivan
Rock
Hand
Blades of grass
Metal pot of eyeball soup
Pebble
Sword
Magic
Porcupine
Running
Water
And once the story has been created by the child, have he/she draw a picture of a particular scene from the story.

Now, read out the story or stories to the class for an audience,
or to mom and dad when they arrive. If there isn't time to read
them today, then save them for tomorrow and read them to everyone. The
children will see that different variations of a story can be created from
different people. Where a toad can be turned into a porcupine in one story,
the toad might eat a pebble in the next.

Imagination and creativity are sure to come shining through. Usually with
the lesser amount of time, an older child might be forced to produce
something rather than contemplating with more time.

This is a great exercise for students, children being babysat, and after
school children in care. Good luck and let me know what you can come
up with!
