The Importance of Science
When asked what the most important subjects for a child to learn are, most responders will answer reading, writing and math.
All of us will agree that the basics are important and necessary for future learning.
However, in today's society our children will need more than reading, writing and math.
Science, social studies, art, language, and home economic activities are all important.
For today, I would like to focus on science.
Scientific knowledge is interrelated to many of the advancements our society makes.
In order to ensure economic growth for our country, we must ensure that our future leaders have a well developed since of scientific knowledge.
As an added bonus, science is incredibly fun.
A lot of teachers are afraid of science because it was a struggle for them in high school and/or college.
But, I am asking you to place your fears aside and find the fun in science.
Grow plants, study rain, watch ants build a mound, bring in a National Geographic video, set up an aquarium, go on a nature hike, make bark rubbings, pick wildflowers, capture fireflies.
If you don't know what to do, grab a shovel and dissect a chunk of earth.
Once you are done with the dissection, challenge the students to put the mound of dirt back to how you find it.
What?
Can't?
Then discuss why once we get involved, change nature, and then try to fix it, it will never be the same.
Even the youngest child will come away with some understanding.
By getting your student's hands dirty, the children will not only have a wonderful time learning, but they will develop an early liking for science.
Besides biology, there are a lot of other sciences that can be studied.
Your class could build parachutes, a car, recycle, build a model of a futuristic city.
You could measure, create, and build!
Are you still nervous?
Then integrate technology into your classroom.
Each and every child needs to be familiar with a computer.
Play games, design a web page, search the World Wide Web, write, read, and type.
Set up a class email account.
You would be amazed at the ideas the children will give you!
Science should be introduced at a young age.
Children need to grow and understand their surroundings.
Bring in a solar system.
Show the children.
Go with the children's imaginations.
You can plan your next project based on what the students want to learn.
It is not important which subject of science you decide to teach, as long as you are introducing the children to a subject that will shape and change their lives.
If you are still lacking in ideas, do a web search on science lesson plans. There are literally hundreds of sites with free information.
You could have a science lesson with a click of the mouse.
Or, have a bit more fun and see where the subject takes you.
