Fall Festivities
Fall is a glorious time.
With all of the change occurring in our environment, why not adapt our curriculum to the change as well?
Gifted children will devour the change of pace as well as the new and exciting activities.
An exciting way to welcome fall would be to give the gifted children a special project that upon its completion could be shared with the entire center.
Depending on the number and ages of your gifted children, divide them into small groups of two or three.
Provide each group with a backboard, which can be purchased at any teacher supply store.
The goal of the project will be for the children to decorate the board in an educational fashion in order to show the changes of fall.
The project can be as detailed as you would like.
Some ideas for the project board would be a fall leaf collection, diagrams showing how trees change with
the season, migration patterns of birds, weather predictions and even cultural events.
For those who really get into the project, you could provide a second backboard where the children could compare fall in the northern hemisphere to fall in the southern hemisphere.
Gifted children thrive on the fact that they are in charge of deciding where the project takes them.
Allow the children to research their interests and decide what should and should not be included on the backboard.
Once the boards are completed, an unveiling complete with a fall party would be fun.
The children who made the boards could present them and answer questions.
During the fall celebration, a child comfortable with reading could read the younger children a book about fall.
And, then a feast could signify the end of the event.
There are many wonderful things one could serve at a fall feast.
Parents could even volunteer to donate items to the party.
Once the younger children in the center learn about seasons, they should also be allowed to express
themselves.
The children could write about the changes and illustrate the changes.
The alphabet and numbers could be adapted to include fall themes.
The children could paint on pumpkins and gourds.
The weather could be taken daily and the amount of rain could be measured.
The children could collect the changing leaves and make collages.
With the displays of the gifted children as well as the other children, the center could be turned into a fall haven.
The displayed work could be seen by the parents when they come to get their children and could also be taken home for display.
Perhaps the parents could even share some of their favorite fall items with the class.
The changing of the seasons should be an exciting event.
The children can write about the changes, read about the seasons, do crafts and even study the effects of cooler temperatures on animals and plants.
Entire units can be made with the theme seasons and should be embraced.
